US Open Day 1 Women’s Predictions including Paolini vs Aiava

Expect plenty of entertaining tennis on day one at the US Open with 20 matches on the schedule. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Jessica Pegula vs Mayar Sherif, Emma Raducanu vs Ena Shibahara, Aryna Sabalenka vs Rebeka Masarova, and Victoria Azarenka vs Hina Inoue. But who will reach the second round?

US Open Day 1 Predictions

Jasmine Paolini vs Destanee Aiava

Ilemona: Jasmine Paolini has been riding a strong season, showing more consistency and belief on hard courts. Aiava can strike big when she finds her range, but she hasn’t had many notable results at this level recently. If Paolini maintains her rhythm, she should be difficult to stop.

Prediction: Paolini in 2

Zain: Fresh off her Cincinnati run, Jasmine Paolini’s superior baseline play and ability to extend rallies should see her through comfortably. Destanee Aiava may compete, but Paolini’s consistency gives her the edge.

Prediction: Paolini in 2

Jordan: Paolini has not performed well at Grand Slams this season. She should still start comfortably against Aiava, who won three close matches in qualifying. If the Australian is slightly fatigued from those exertions, Paolini can exploit that with her physicality.

Leylah Fernandez vs Rebecca Marino

Ilemona: Leylah Fernandez thrives in front of big crowds and has been finding some momentum again on hard courts. Marino brings plenty of firepower, but her results have been uneven this year. This matchup could feature some explosive rallies, though Fernandez’s defensive skills may tilt it her way.

Prediction: Fernandez in 2

Zain: This all-Canadian clash promises entertainment, but Leylah Fernandez’s athleticism and counterpunching give her the advantage. Rebecca Marino’s big serve can keep it close, yet Fernandez’s movement should prove decisive.

Prediction: Fernandez in 2

Jordan: Fernandez played terrifically to win the Citi DC Open a few weeks ago, but her form has dipped since. 34-year-old Marino fought through qualifying admirably, but a poor performance from her fellow Canadian will be needed for her to cause an upset. Fernandez, despite recent struggles, is a much more complete player.

Prediction: Fernandez in 2

Polina Kudermetova vs Nuria Parrizas Diaz

Ilemona: Polina Kudermetova is still new to the biggest stages but has shown flashes of promise with her clean baseline game. Parrizas Diaz, on the other hand, has struggled for wins on hard courts in recent months. The balance here leans toward the younger player if she settles into the occasion.

Prediction: Parrizas Diaz in 3

Zain: Polina Kudermetova is still establishing herself, but her raw talent suggests she has the potential to edge out this battle. Nuria Parrizas Diaz brings more experience, though Kudermetova has the bigger upside on hard courts.

Prediction: Kudermetova in 2

Jordan: Kudermetova will be the aggressor in this contest. I like Parrizas Diaz’s chances of digging in and frustrating her opponent. Kudermetova can become frustrated against strong defensive players.

Marketa Vondrousova vs Oksana Selekhmeteva

Ilemona: Marketa Vondrousova’s touch and variety have already carried her deep at the majors, and she’s proven effective on this surface. Selekhmeteva hasn’t had the same exposure to tour-level competition, making this a steep challenge. Unless nerves creep in, Vondrousova should be in control.

Prediction: Vondrousova in 2

Zain: Marketa Vondrousova’s variety and shot-making make her the clear favorite, backed by her Slam pedigree. Oksana Selekhmeteva may show flashes, but Vondrousova should advance comfortably.

Prediction: Vondrousova in 2

Jordan: Selekhmetova came through qualifying to reach the US Open main draw for the first time. While an impressive effort, she has not done enough to convince me she can upset Vondrousova. The Czech’s craftiness should take her into the next round.

Prediction: Vondrousova in 2
