Gonzales city council members have unanimously approved the Vista Lucia project, a housing development that aims to provide affordable housing options for families in the area. The project will be built outside the city limits, with plans to expand to the east side of Gonzales while protecting other areas from development. “778 acres that we are looking to add to the east side of Gonzales, where we will be protecting the west side and the south and the north from development, but we needed to expand somewhere, so east side,” said Taven Brown, Community Development Director for Gonzales. Officials say a local family has agreed to sell hundreds of acres of farmland to the developer, Pembrook Development, making the project possible. “The project by design will have multiple price points for people to enter housing, from market rate homes to market rate homes on smaller properties to town homes and duplexes that are less expensive,” said Brown. The need for housing in Gonzales is significant, as many residents have been saving for years to afford a home. “We’ve heard stories of people just saving up for years to make a deposit and they get ready for a mortgage and they are looking for someone that’s going to build a home and that day looks closer,” said a city official.Another city official emphasized the need for housing due to the growth of the agricultural community. “Definitely have a need for housing and for the growth we have lots of ag workers here in the ag community and we know that housing has been a problem,” said Gonzales resident, Luz Garcia.”A lot of housing because the business is growing, Gonzales is very peaceful and very good location,” said Yong Kim, a local store owner.City leaders say they have finished the pre-application process and are now working to redraw city boundaries to include the new land.
“We’ve heard stories of people just saving up for years to make a deposit and they get ready for a mortgage and they are looking for someone that’s going to build a home and that day looks closer,” said a city official.
Another city official emphasized the need for housing due to the growth of the agricultural community.
“Definitely have a need for housing and for the growth we have lots of ag workers here in the ag community and we know that housing has been a problem,” said Gonzales resident, Luz Garcia.
“A lot of housing because the business is growing, Gonzales is very peaceful and very good location,” said Yong Kim, a local store owner.
City leaders say they have finished the pre-application process and are now working to redraw city boundaries to include the new land.
While the project is moving forward, it has a long way to go before families can move in.
