Stormy close to the week

Columbus prepares for wind, rain and a cool down

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – We’ve been spoiled by some dry and nice weather for the past few days a steadier shot of moisture is creeping back up on us. The clear skies that enlivened the week are turning to clouds, rain and perhaps storms. COLUMBUS, Ohio – As the weekend approaches, Columbus-area residents can expect the last few days of mild weather to be a turbulent one with cooler temperatures on the horizon.

FRIDAY: Few Storms in the Forecast

There’s the first real change in weather on Friday. The morning will start becoming overcast, after a quiet beginning to the day. Meteorologists say they cannot rule out isolated showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening.

The silver lining with all of this is that the overall risk has decreased since previous forecasts. But that does not mean we are entirely out of the woods. A few storms may still become strong, with gusty winds and brief heavy rain. These storms can develop rapidly, so keep an eye on the weather as the day goes on.

Friday will be comfortable with highs in the upper 70s. It will feel warm and a bit sticky, especially before any rain arrives. The combination of warmth and moisture will also be available to help fuel the risk for those late day storms.

If you have Friday plans outside — school football games, dog walks, weekend errands — look to the sky. You might get in on a bit of a downpour or see some lightning. Most of the activity should wane once the sun sets, making for partly cloudy skies through overnight.

SATURDAY: More Rain, but Severe Threat Wanes Rather than diminishing, morning rain will increase during the day Saturday.

Saturday’s forecast is similar to that of Friday, but with still relatively low chances for severe weather. Morning hours could begin mostly dry with some light showers in sections of the region. Another round of isolated rain and storms may be on the way late morning into the afternoon.

The threat for severe weather on Saturday is very low, but that does not mean we won’t hear a rumble or two of thunder. The air will stay humid, and a few rain showers could locally be quite heavy. Regardless, widespread storms are not anticipated.

Temperatures will once more reach into the upper 70s, another mild and relatively muggy day. This may be one of the last warm afternoons before we take a steep dive on Sunday.

If you are traveling or hosting outdoor gatherings, it might be wise to have an indoor alternative. You’ll want to keep that umbrella or rain jacket close by, because those scattered showers could pop up again with your afternoon wind down.

SUNDAY: A Sharp Cool Down Comes to Town

Sunday will feel like a totally different season than the last few days. A powerful cold front will move through late Saturday, ushering in a salvo of cool, crisp air to the area.

By Sunday morning, you will feel an impact immediately. The air should be fresh and cool, with temperatures wrestling to make it out of the 50s. AFTERNOON Another chilly afternoon as we fail the make it out of the 50s In Most Locations in northeast Mississippi. It will be a huge change after several warm days.

The best part? Sunday looks dry. The high pressure behind the front will mean it won’t be followed by any rain. So you can finally have that quiet, cool day without worrying about thunderstorms or strong winds.

Sunday night will be the chilliest of the weekend, with lows in the 30s. That means jackets are coming out, and if you have sensitive plants, you might want to make provisions for colder weather.

A Transition to Fall Weather

This weekend is a turning point; we’ll go from that sense of late summer to full-on fall weather. Stormy close to the week followed by calm, crisp days ahead. When the rain and wind clear out, next week is on track for sun and cool temperatures — a reprieve for many who are exhausted after weeks of humidity.

People should stay tuned to local forecasts and alerts through the weekend, residents are urged. While the danger from an extreme outbreak is low, conditions can evolve rapidly, particularly in the afternoon on Friday and Saturday.

So, with Columbus and surrounding areas preparing for this stormy weekend ending, there’s not a better reminder of how quickly weather can change in Mississippi. This weekend has a little bit of everything, from warm, breezy afternoons to cool, quiet nights.

Stay safe, stay dry and prepare to enjoy these chilly, cozy mornings that are finally on their way.
