The first year of Pete Carroll’s return to being a head coach has not gone well. The Las Vegas Raiders are currently 2-7, and the team’s ugly 10-7 loss to the Denver Broncos has led to the organization making a big move by firing a coach.

During the game, there was a moment when Carroll and special team coordinator Tom McMahon appeared to get into an argument. This has led to the coach now being relieved of his duties.
Per multiple reports, the Raiders have moved on from McMahon. This is a huge step that may lead to other sweeping changes for the team in 2026.
The special teams for the Raiders have clearly not played well in 2025, and the game-changing blocked punt that occurred in the loss to the Broncos was the proverbial nail in the coffin for McMahon.

Las Vegas had high hopes entering the 2025 season, as Carroll was now set to lead this new era of Raiders football. On top of that, the team also brought back former NFL head coach Chip Kelly to run the offense.
Sadly, the offense and special teams have been two of the biggest pain points for the team thus far. Kelly may stay for the remainder of the 2025 season, but Carroll’s firing of McMahon was necessary to show the Raiders organization that this team is headed in a positive direction.
The issue is that the Raiders are headed for another soft reset in 2026. The team traded Jakobi Meyers and was expected to move more players at the trade deadline. That did not happen, but things need to be upended in 2026.
That has already started with a coach being fired, but expect more changes to be implemented either before the season ends.
