Mirra Andreeva, the 4th seed, heads into the third round of the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal to face the 26-year-old American McCartney Kessler, the tournament’s 28th seed.
This is Andreeva’s first singles match of the tournament. She received a first-round bye and then a second-round walkover when Bianca Andreescu withdrew injured. Kessler comes into this afternoon’s match after a tough comeback win in the second round over Maya Joint in three sets.
Andreeva has enjoyed a breakthrough season, winning back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells, where she prevailed over Aryna Sabalenka in three sets.
Andreeva has largely seen quarterfinals exits since then, but she’s 36-11 on the year and currently ranked No. 5. Not bad for an 18-year-old.
Kessler, meanwhile, has claimed two WTA titles in 2025 (Hobart and Nottingham) and compiled a solid 18–9 hard-court record this year. She’s 27-17 overall in 2025 and currently ranked at 32.
Andreeva-Kessler Head-to-Head
This will be the first WTA main-draw meeting between Andreeva and Kessler.
What to Watch
Andreeva’s aggressive return game, variety, and ability to hit depth under pressure pose major problems for Kessler. If she can find rhythm in her serve and return, she should take control.
Kessler must rely on heavy winners from her forehand and capitalize on any rust in Andreeva’s game, especially early in the match.
Prediction
Andreeva in straight sets. The 18-year-old is the clear favorite, but may show rust in early sets. Expect her to regain form midway through the first set and continue the hard-court dominance we’ve seen this year.
