Suspect apprehended after violent attack on jogger at Turkey Mountain

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa police have apprehended a suspect following a violent attack on a 25-year-old female jogger at Turkey Mountain early Thursday morning.

Police said they received a call around 6:45 a.m. reporting that the victim had been stabbed in the face and head while on the trail. She was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.

Tulsa Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg described part of the attack, saying, “He approached her, clearly acting crazy, and then he was spewing out all sorts of things about ‘you’re going to meet with God’ and different things like that. So he’s clearly suffering from some type of mental illness.”

Authorities identified the suspect as Jesse James Brown and issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Brown fled into the woods after the attack and was taken into custody around 6:04 p.m. near 500 W. 68th Street. NewsChannel 8 obtained exclusive footage of the arrest.

Court records show Brown has a criminal history, including a domestic assault and battery charge in 2023 that was dismissed through a civil mental health diversion program, and a prior conviction for public intoxication in 2016.

Tulsa Police responded to the area of 68th and Elwood after learning the suspect returned to the area.

When officers arrived, Brown took off on foot and ran back towards Turkey Mountain. Several officers and a K9 closed in on him. A lieutenant was also at Turkey Mountain, ready to intercept him.

The suspect was apprehended without incident and booked for assault with a dangerous weapon, according to police.

Police warn residents that although incidents like this are uncommon, it’s always safer to travel in groups, keep your cell phone accessible, stay alert, and carry self-defense equipment if you feel comfortable.
