Bernard Tomic will be making a rare main-tour appearance when he goes up against Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open first round on Monday. In fact, Newport is the only ATP main draw in which the 32-year-old has played this season.
Tomic, ranked No. 168, did well to qualify in Almaty by beating both Denis Yevseyev and Marc-Andrea Huesler in three sets–the latter 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(6) on Sunday.
For Tomic, an in-form opponent ranked 38th is a steep step up in competition. Moutet has been playing well since the start of the hard-court summer and his Asian swing included a semifinal showing in Hangzhou. The French left-hander should advance without too much trouble.
