Amber Alert canceled: Child found, suspect at large

The child was found safe in the 1800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in St. Louis. Police say Jacob Robert Putman, 30, is still at large.

SUNSET HILLS, Mo. — The Missouri State Highway Patrol canceled an Amber Alert out of Sunset Hills after the child was found safe. The suspect remains at large.

Police are seeking Jacob Robert Putman, 30. The patrol plans to apply for charges of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree child welfare endangerment, stealing a motor vehicle and felony fleeing.

The Amber Alert initially said that Putnam had asked the child’s mother for help jumping his vehicle and then stole her car, but in an updated release, police said the circumstances were different from what was originally reported.

At about 4:40 p.m., Sunset Hills officers received a call about a possible stolen vehicle on the commuter parking lot at 10973 Kennerly Road.

They arrived to find Putnam and the child’s mother, who police referred to as Putnam’s “associate,” standing outside a blue Chevrolet Cruze. They had the car’s hood up and were attempting to jump start a truck that was reported stolen within the past month.

Upon seeing police, Putnam, who had active felony arrest warrants, got into the Cruze belonging to the mother and fled.

The woman told police her child was in the car.

Officers followed the car but lost sight of it, and an Amber Alert was issued.

Just after 6 p.m., the child was found safe in the 1800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in St. Louis.

St. Louis police found the Cruze on the 8500 block of Minnesota Avenue a short time later.

Anyone with information was asked to call Sunset Hills police at 314-849-4400.
