Shots were fired at 411 E. Green St. at 12:34 a.m. The Division of Public Safety sent an Illini-Alert to students and faculty advising the public to leave the area if possible or secure their location.
According to dispatchers, the incident appears to have been a drive-by shooting. Dispatch reports disclosed that the victim was male and “not alert” as of 12:28 a.m.
UIPD, the Urbana Police Department, the Champaign Police Department and Illinois State Police are on scene.
“I heard a couple pops, and then everybody around me just started sprinting away from Green Street,” said Charlie Marks, sophomore in Business.
Jacob Castaneda, senior in Business, was at Joe’s Brewery at the time of the shooting.
“I thought it was fireworks, personally,” Castaneda said. “Then I got the Illini-Alert that shots were fired.”
By 12:38 a.m., KAMS and Joe’s Brewery had both locked their doors, restricting anyone from entering or exiting, according to multiple sources from within these establishments.
An Illini-Alert sent at 12:47 a.m. said police are still investigating and advised people to avoid the area.
At 1:04 a.m., dispatchers on the METCAD police scanner stated that a subject had been detained.
Another Illini-Alert sent at 1:09 a.m. said authorities believed the suspect had left the area but officers remained on scene for “further investigation.”
