A Mercer spokesperson says that a threat was called into the university, prompting the shelter in place order.
MACON, Ga. — Mercer University has issued a shelter in place order after a threat towards its Macon campus, according to an emergency alert sent out by the university.
An alert sent by the university says, “An active threat has been reported on the Macon campus. Shelter in place. More information to follow.”
Mercer spokesperson Jennifer Fairfield-Williams confirmed the authenticity of the alert. Williams confirms that a threat to the campus was phoned in, prompting law enforcement to begin a sweep of the campus.
The university will offer additional details when they learn more.
As of 1 p.m., the university is still under a shelter-in-place order.
It comes just one day after an active shooter threat was reported at Central Georgia Technical College and Rutland High School, but both of those turned out to be false reports. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office believes those two threats were made by the same person using the same phone number.
Universities and colleges across the nation have been hit with false active shooter threats, causing large police responses and disruptions during the first few weeks of classes.
