A new report about Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls 6 is bad news for Fallout 5. It has been 10 years since the release of Fallout 4. This is already three more years than the gap of time between Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. And the wait isn’t even close to over. Not only does the next installment in the post-apocalyptic RPG series remain unannounced, but a new report would, if accurate, mean it is very far away.
The new report comes from well-known industry insider eXtas1s, who, in a recent YouTube video, claimed that Bethesda Game Studios and Xbox are planning to release The Elder Scrolls 6 sometime in 2027. This means, by consequence, that the earliest Fallout 5 will begin development is in 2027.
Fallout 5 Not Coming Until the 2030s
If The Elder Scrolls 6 releases in 2027, this would mean it took Bethesda Game Studios about four years to make, as production of the game didn’t begin until 2023, when the team shipped Starfield. This would be a decent turnaround by AAA game standards, though perhaps not surprising considering the game had many years in pre-production. If Fallout 5 follows the same trajectory, and The Elder Scrolls 6 releases in 2027, that would put Fallout 5 releasing in 2031, which is likely years into the PS6 and next Xbox generation. In other words, we are at least six years away from Fallout 5, if not more. The only way this is not true is if Bethesda Game Studios expanded to a two-project team, but it has never been that, and there’s no reason to think that has changed.
Now, it’s important to note we have both an unverified report and speculation here. While eXtas1s has proven reliable in the past, he does not have a bulletproof track record. Meanwhile, he says nothing about Fallout 5 in his new report. Everything about Fallout 5 above is speculation. It’s informed speculation using the details of the new report, but it’s still speculation.
The good news for Fallout fans who can’t wait another six years for Fallout 5, is that there are rumors that a new Fallout 4 spin-off is in the works. However, right now, the rumors about this are limited to a single source. All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. What do you want to see from Fallout 5, and are you willing to wait until 2031 for it?
