NYC subway outage: Power loss at West 4th Street prompts multiple MTA delays and cancelations during AM commute

NEW YORK (WABC) — There were severe delays and cancelations across the subway system on Tuesday morning due to a power loss to a signaling system at West 4th Street.

The MTA said it happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. and they are investigating if it is heat-related.

Officials say the low power impacted the signal system and the signals went to red, or stop, preventing trains from proceeding.

Crews were still in the process of resetting the signals.

Eyewitness News is told it appears one of the breakers tripped, but crews are still investigating what ultimately led to the severe delays.

For most riders, the greatest impacts were to the A/B/C/D/E/F/M train lines.

Transit officials are overseeing the recovery efforts, but it was a messy commute so far on Tuesday morning.

NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said while there was no power to the signals, there was still power to the trains and therefore passengers on the delayed trains did have air conditioning.

“We were able to reset one of the breakers in the area and so service is starting to resume at this point,” Crichlow said. “Teams are out there on the tracks. You can see a lot of activity out here. Teams are out here resetting signals to be able to get trains moving and up and running for the early afternoon.”

By 2 p.m. Tuesday, the MTA said there were still severe delays on the D line and delays on the A / C / E/ B / F / M lines.
