PECO announces $10 million relief fund for customers in need – NBC10 Philadelphia

Many PECO customers in Pennsylvania will soon be eligible for financial assistance through the new PECO Customer Relief Fund.

On Wednesday, July 30, PECO announced the new fund with Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and community partners at PA CareerLink in Montgomery County. The fund will make $10 million available to eligible customers to help battle rising energy costs during the summer. The fund is supported by Exelon, PECO’s parent company, and will provide one-time grants of $500 to limited and moderate-income customers.

“The PECO Customer Relief Fund targets those who far too often fall between the cracks – hard-working families who make too much to qualify for assistance, but not enough to be financially secure,” said Davis. “No Pennsylvanian should have to choose between keeping the lights on or paying for their prescriptions or groceries.”

During the summer months, energy demands tend to increase while customers try to keep their homes cool. As customers use more energy and the supply decreases, prices begin to rise, making affordability an issue for many.

Customers are eligible if they are in arrears, which means that they have overdue energy bills, and if their household income falls between 151% and 300% of the federal poverty level. For example, a family of four that makes between $48,547 and $96,450 a year will be eligible.

“PECO has deep roots in our community and we’re proud to do our part during this challenging time as local families struggle with overall inflation pressures, including energy bills,” said David Vahos, PECO President and CEO. “PECO provides a critical service that keeps our communities safe, healthy and strong. The PECO Customer Relief Fund allows us to provide immediate relief for customers struggling with high energy supply costs while continuing to work with state and local officials on forward-looking solutions.”

The PECO Customer Relief Fund is one of multiple programs that help customers manage their bills and make energy more affordable. These programs include the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, the Customer Assistance Program and the Matching Energy Assistance Fund.

The aid will be distributed by United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting poverty. After eligible customers submit an application that is approved and processed, relief will come in the form of a one-time credit on customers’ PECO bills.

“At United Way, our mission is to fight poverty and expand opportunity for every person in every community we serve,” said Bill Golderer, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. “The PECO Customer Relief Fund will provide vital support to families who are working hard but still struggling to make ends meet. We are proud to partner with PECO to deliver meaningful, immediate relief—and to continue our work together toward long-term solutions that lift more families out of poverty.”

Starting on August 4, 2025, customers will be able to apply for aid through the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.
