Police issue shelter-in-place order in Windham and Raymond


Police will hold a press conference at 7:30 p.m. Friday. How you can watch on NEWS CENTER Maine.

WINDHAM, Maine — The Windham Police Department and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place order at around 4 p.m. Friday to people in and along the Windham and Raymond town line.

This comes after police closed part of Route 302 in Windham was closed Friday afternoon as police searched for a person connected to a shooting in North Windham.

The road was closed at Landing Road, according to an official with the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center. The road was reopened before 6:30 p.m.


The following Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) message was sent to people in the area: “Gunman at large in North Windham. Shelter indoors, lock doors. Report suspicious behavior to 911. Last seen Windham/Raymond line. Stay inside. Tune to local news or Windham PD for updates.”

The shelter in place is for people in the area of Route 302 from Route 85 in Raymond to White Bridge Road in Windham and surrounding side streets.


Maine State Police and Windham police will hold a press conference about the incident Friday night at 7:30. The press conference will be at the Windham Central Fire Station at 718 Roosevelt Trail.

Police have not said if the shooting was deadly. However, a NEWS CENTER Maine photographer reported seeing a tarp in the middle of the road at the scene. When police briefly lifted the tarp up, our photographer could see a body underneath it. 

As of Friday afternoon, police were trying to locate a vehicle that took off after the shooting. Cumberland County sheriff’s deputies were searching in the Raymond area, Sheriff Kevin Joyce told NEWS CENTER Maine.

At 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Department of Public Safety said Maine State Police were assisting Windham police with the shooting incident. 

State police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call them at 207-624-7076.
