Some of your prayers have just been answered.
On Tuesday, the Red Sox (63-51) announced they have designated right-handed relief pitcher Jorge Alcala for assignment to make room on the roster for right-handed pitcher Isaiah Campbell from Triple-A Worcester.

For the uninitiated, Alcala has been an absolute liability for Boston since being acquired by the Twins in June. Once thought of as a hard-throwing arm that could provide Boston with some much needed depth out of the bullpen, Alcala’s failings on the mound of late have gotten to the point where Red Sox fans are just waiting for the inevitable earned runs when he enters the game.
Take Monday night, for example.
With Boston leading Kansas City (56-57) 8-1 heading into the 8th inning, Alcala entered the game.
In just a third of an inning, here was his line:
3 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 home runs, and 1 strikeout on 24 pitches across four batters.
8-1 became 8-4, which eventually became 8-5 after Justin Wilson (2.83 ERA) allowed an RBI-single.
What should have been a tidy blowout-win became a comfortable three-run victory.

First world problems? Sure. But for a team destined for October, innings like this can’t happen against better opponents.
Here’s the Red Sox full statement on Alcala:
“Alcala, 30, recorded one out in the seventh inning of last night’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins on June 11, the right-hander has posted a 3.31 ERA (6 ER/16.1 IP) in 19 games for the Red Sox. The Dominican Republic native was signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent on December 3, 2014, and owns a 4.24 ERA (96 ER/204.0 IP) in 185 career games for Minnesota (2019-25) and Boston (2025).”
The Red Sox will go for their seventh win in a row tonight at Fenway Park, which would give them their third consecutive series win. First pitch against the Royals is slated for 7:10 p.m. ET, with Garrett Crochet (12-4, 2.23 ERA) on the mound for Boston. Kansas City will throw righty Ryan Bergert (1-0, 2.78 ERA).
