Storms dump 4 inches of rain in Baltimore County

Heavy downpours swept through Maryland on Wednesday, triggering flash flood warnings, toppling trees and delaying the Orioles game at Camden Yards.

The storms hit hardest in Northern Baltimore County, where roughly 4 inches of rain fell in just a few hours, according to Luis Rosa, a meteorologist for the Baltimore/Washington field office of the National Weather Service.

The fast-moving weather system also suspended the Harbor Connector ferry and forced detours on the Maryland Transit Administration’s CityLink 54 route until 7:30 a.m. Thursday after a tree came down near McClean Boulevard and Perring Parkway.

At Camden Yards, first pitch against the Seattle Mariners was pushed to 8:15 p.m.

Lingering showers will continue Wednesday night as fog could roll into the area.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely Thursday around 2 p.m., NWS predicts. Rosa said rain Thursday will be less intense, though.

On both days, weather officials said, temperatures will linger in the 90s and even feel like 100 degrees.

The rain follows a wet July that started with severe storms, flooding and power outages. More flooding and torrential rain followed weeks later.

The month ended with flash flooding that submerged vehicles and led to the death of a teen in Carroll County.

NWS meteorologist Anna Stuck said the region saw 5.75 inches of rain in July, above the typical 4.8 inches.

August has been rather dry, at 1.65 inches below normal rainfall, Stuck said, so the rain on Wednesday offers some balance. NWS predicts mostly clear skies and sunny weather after Thursday.
