Sydney Sweeney Sings Karaoke with ‘Euphoria’ Costars amid American Eagle Ad Backlash

Sydney Sweeney is having some fun with her Euphoria costars amid controversy.

The actress, 27, has been facing backlash over her American Eagle denim campaign, but she was carefree this weekend as she stepped out with Maude Apatow, Hunter Schafer and Jacob Elordi.

The group is back together as filming is underway on the long-awaited third season of the hit HBO series — and on Saturday, Aug. 2, fans captured videos and photos of them hanging out at The GasLite in Santa Monica.

Sweeney, Apatow, Schafer and Elordi were seen hanging out and singing karaoke during their night out.

In photos shared on X, Schafer, Apatow and Elordi, 28, were spotted hanging out in a booth together in the dimly-lit bar, and Apatow was covering her face with her hands at one point during the conversation.

While Sweeney wasn’t pictured in those photos, another video captured the moment that she was joined by Schafer, 26, and Apatow, 27, onstage.

In the short clip, the three actresses sang 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?” and Sweeney was smiling and laughing as she and her costars performed.

Filming on Euphoria season 3 began in February, but little to no details about the long-awaited season have been revealed.

On Feb. 10, HBO revealed in a post on X that production was underway and shared the first photo from the upcoming season, a solo shot of Zendaya, who plays recovering drug addict Rue.

Season 3 will pick up after a time jump, visiting the cast after high school. Several stars will not be returning for season 3, including Storm Reid, who played Zendaya’s younger sister, and Nika King, who played her mom.

Rosalía and Marshawn Lynch are among the newcomers for the season.

Sweeney’s outing with her costars comes nearly two weeks after she became the face of American Eagle’s fall denim campaign, which sparked widespread controversy.

On July 23, she was revealed as the face of their fall campaign, titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”

The tagline and the content of some of the ad spots prompted widespread criticism online over claims that playing on the word “genes” hints at genetic superiority and is racially charged.

In one ad, Sweeney said, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color.”

Then, she switches her reference from genetics to the denim she’s wearing to say, “My jeans are blue.”

While Sweeney has not commented on the controversy that’s emerged, the brand seemingly appeared to double down on the campaign in an Aug. 1 Instagram post.

“‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans'” is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,” the brand wrote in the statement. “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
