Three People Shot After Gunman Opens Fire Near Times Square
Three people were injured in a shooting near New York’s Times Square in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The shooting took place at around 1:20 a.m. ET on Saturday at the intersection between West 44th Street and 7th Avenue, a NYPD spokesperson told Newsweek.
They added that the three victims were being treated in Bellevue Hospital, where they remain in a stable condition. The NYPD said the three victims were an 18-year-old woman, and two men, aged 19 and 65.

What To Know
A 17-year-old male was taken into custody following the incident. He has not been named due to his age. Police told Newsweek the shooting took place after a “verbal dispute between two people escalated.”
Footage posted on social media showed a panicked scene around Times Square, with numerous people running as police attempted to lock down the area. One person is seen being treated on the ground, then taken away on a stretcher as police instruct bystanders to disperse. Newsweek could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.
On July 28, nearly two weeks ago, four people were shot dead in New York City when a man identified by authorities as Shane Devon Tamura from Nevada opened fire in a midtown Manhattan office block. Those killed included police officer 36-year-old Didarul Islam.
Tamura entered the lobby of the commercial office building at 345 Park Avenue while “spraying it with gunfire” and killing three people, including Didarul Islam, police said. A woman and the shooter were found dead in a hallway on the building’s 33rd floor.
New York Mayor Eric Adams later said the shooter had been attempting to target the NFL headquarters, which is based in the same building, but took the wrong elevator.

NYPD officers converged on the area and collected evidence. Detectives arrived on scene and police implemented several road closures in the area.
“The shooting took place Saturday morning at approximately 1:20 AM. An 18-year-old female, 19-year-old male and a 65-year-old male were shot and the victims were transported by ems to a local area hospital. A suspect was placed into custody. The area has since been reopened.”
