Weather Impact Alert issued for storms Friday night into Saturday

Wind and heavy rain are the main threats for the storms, which currently appear ready to hit the Twin Cities metro between midnight and 2 a.m.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — The heat and high dewpoints are rolling in, fuel for a low pressure system that might launch significant storms come Friday.

That potential, and the risk of severe weather, has KARE 11’s weather team issuing a Weather Impact Alert that runs from 8 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Saturday. The main risks are high winds and heavy rain.

KARE 11’s John Zeigler said a low-pressure center will move into Minnesota from North Dakota Friday afternoon and early evening, with storms developing during the afternoon hours in Fargo-Moorhead. Those storms will form a line and move southeast, hitting Alexandria and Brainerd closer to 10 p.m. and the Twin Cities metro shortly after midnight.

Zeigler said the exact timing of these storms can change based on when the initial thunderstorms develop in Fargo-Moorhead, so the KARE 11 weather team will be updating the situation as new models come in.
