Monday’s grand prize was the fifth largest jackpot in Powerball history.
WASHINGTON — The Powerball is steadily approaching the largest prize in the game’s history, rising to $1.3 billion after nobody won the jackpot Monday night.
Monday’s drawing was for an estimated $1.2 billion prize, or a $544.1 million cash payout. And although nobody won big, there are a lot of new millionaires.
Tickets sold in California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, a pair in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia all won $1 million off of Monday’s drawing.
Two additional tickets, sold in Montana and North Carolina, each won $2 million for buying the more expensive Power Play option.
Now, the Powerball is climbing again before the Wednesday drawing. The next drawing will be worth an estimated $1.3 billion, with a lump sum payout of $589 million.
It would be the fifth largest jackpot in history, just shy of a $1.326 billion 2024 winner.
Monday’s Powerball jackpot had a lump sum cash value coming in at just over half a billion dollars — $544.1 million before taxes. That’s the option most winners take, as opposed to the full value paid out as an annuity.
Monday was the 40th drawing since the jackpot was last won in California on May 31, 2025.
Winning Powerball Numbers for Monday, September 1, 2025
Monday’s winning numbers were 8-23-25-40-53, Powerball 5. The Power Play multiplier was 3x.
If a winner matches all five numbers and the Powerball, they have the option to take the full jackpot paid out over 30 years, or a smaller cash payout. Winners almost always take the cash option.
Even with the smaller lump sum payout, federal taxes will eat into those winnings, and some states also tax big lottery prizes.
What are the odds of winning the Powerball?
