Yankees’ Luis Gil Could Return from Injury on Sunday, Make Season Debut vs. Marlins

The New York Yankees could have a key starter back in the rotation this weekend.

Per the Talkin’ Yanks podcast, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Luis Gil is expected to throw 75 pitches in his rehab start in Triple-A on Tuesday, and if things go well, he will start against the Miami Marlins on Sunday.

Gil has yet to make his season debut after suffering a high-grade lat strain in May. He made a rehab start in Triple-A last week, allowing four hits and five runs in 3.1 innings. He recorded four strikeouts and three walks, throwing 67 pitches and 44 strikes.

The reigning AL Rookie of the Year is coming off a season in which he recorded a 15-7 record behind a 3.50 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.

The Yankees’ rotation has been depleted by injuries this season. It started in the spring when star ace Gerrit Cole underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery, and New York has faced a few more blows throughout the year. Starter Clarke Schmidt recently underwent Tommy John surgery as well.

Even with all the injuries, the Yankees have managed to stay afloat, sitting in second place in the AL East at 57-49. Getting Gil back on the mound could help spark a late-season surge after recent struggles.
